"I had no choice": Tragic reason why F1 boss took his own life

The heartbreaking reason why F1 boss Max Mosley committed suicide has been revealed.

The 81-year-old was found dead with “significant injuries consistent with a gunshot wound”, The Sun reported.

On Tuesday, the Westminster Coroner in London heard that Mosley had shot himself when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Following his terminal diagnosis, Mosley was told that he had “weeks” to live, and there was no cure for his chronic bladder and bowel pain. He was offered palliative care.

Mosley was found dead lying in a pool of his blood with a double-barreled shotgun in between his knees on May 24, 2021.

Outside on his bedroom door was a note that read: “Do not enter, call the police”.

Police had also found a suicide note on the bedside table that was covered in blood. The only words they could make out were, “I had no choice”, the court heard.

“It was obvious he had used the shotgun on himself and endured a life-ending injury. It’s clear he had injuries not compatible with life,” the coroner said.

Mosley was referred to Dr Rasha Al-Quarainy, a consultant in palliative care from the Central and North West London NHS Trust, a month before his suicide.

She told the courts that Mosley’s B-cell Lymphoma was “inoperable” and that he hadn’t mentioned any suicidal thoughts.

“On the contrary he said that he had plans to renovate their home in Gloucestershire that wasn’t going to be finished until July.

“He was still seeking treatment possibly in the US, possibly in the UK, and some other matters he spoke to me about.”

Dr Christopher McNamara, a consultant haematologist, who had been treating Mosley since 2019, said he had spoken about his life.

“He emailed me on 22 May 2021, these were questions about the management of the condition. He had accepted this would not be cured,” Dr McNamara said in court.

“He was extremely upset as his quality of life was poor and left him uncomfortable.

“He had expressed ideas of committing suicide to myself and other members of the team previously.

“He never expressed a plan of doing this and all he said was that the problem was his wife would not accept this.”

Image: Getty

"Disgusting to witness": Lisa Wilkinson discusses Karl's divorce

Lisa Wilkinson has discussed her former Today co-host Karl Stefanovic's public divorce from Cassandra Thorburn.

In her new memoir, It Wasn't Meant To Be Like This, Lisa recounts how Karl was treated by the paparazzi after finalising the split from his wife in October 2017.

Lisa recalled a particular incident at an airport where Karl was "goaded" by a pap about the reasons he and Cassandra had parted ways after 21 years of marriage.

"At one airport, as we came through the security doors, I heard a pap continually goading him, 'Hey Karl, why did you leave your wife?'" she wrote.

Despite tensions between Lisa and Karl, she applauded Karl for his composure.

"It was disgusting to witness, but Karl didn't flinch; he just kept walking. He refused to give them what they wanted – a blow-up."

"His restraint was extraordinary."

Lisa wanted to defend her co-host against the rude paparazzi, but Karl told her to calm down.

"I, on the other hand, wanted to yell at them to back off, and it took every bit of strength I had in me not to."

"Sensing my fury, Karl just mumbled under his breath next to me, 'Don't react.'"

Karl met his current wife, shoe designer and former model Jasmine Yarbrough, just five months after his very public split from Cassandra in 2016.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lisa Wilkinson (@lisa_wilkinson)

Image credits: Getty Images / The Project

What's Cassandra Thorburn up to now?

Cassandra Thorburn has had a lot of time for reflection as she looks forward to celebrating turning 50 this week.

"I don't get how anyone could dread turning 50 – there's so much to look forward to, and so many wonderful memories to reflect on. I'm grateful for my life and the direction it has taken," Cass explained.

The thriving mum-of-three is also not interested in looking back on the past.

This is particularly fitting as it's almost five years since her ex-husband of 21 years, Karl Stefanovic, left her and their family.

"You reach the stage when clarity becomes the norm, your children are thriving, and you feel within yourself a tremendous sense of pride," she says.

"I've made our new house I bought over a year ago into a warm family home. The next life chapters, personally and professionally, are going to set me up for the next 20 years. I've got a very robust sense of peace and well-being."

Cass, despite a brief stint on Dancing With The Stars, has knuckled down as a Media and Communications Specialist for Taldumande Youth Services, which is an organisation that supports vulnerable and homeless children in greater Sydney.

"I love working with young people, and I continue to work part-time with Taldumande," she told to Woman's Day.

But I knew my true calling for my long-term future was to immerse myself in the aged care sector – it's something I considered even before I was married," Cass explains.

"I've always been very family focused. I think it was a culmination of my dad passing away, and the real challenges faced this past year that saw many of our elderly folk isolated. I haven't seen my mum in country Victoria for over a year," she says, wiping away a tear.

The intense family focus is what helped Cass decide to help out some of Australia's most vulnerable residents.

"I'm currently employed in low care and will make a decision if I go into high care, or go back to full-time university to become a nurse," she explained.

"I'm studying a series of short courses focusing on dementia, an area close to my heart after my nana Marie battled Alzheimer's for over 20 years.

"Turning 50, I've had a lot of time to contemplate, and I truly believe I've found my place.

"If this is fifty and fabulous, then I'm in!"

Karl Stefanovic addresses “hurtful” claims

Karl Stefanovic has denied claims that his wife Jasmine Yarbrough was responsible for the end of his 21-year marriage with Cassandra Thorburn.

In a new interview with Stellar, the Today show host said Yarbrough has had to endure public condemnation since they met in late 2016.

“She’s been through so much. She’s been pilloried and accused of things that didn’t happen,” Stefanovic said.

“It’s not her fault she fell in love with bugalugs, and the accusations were wrong about her stealing me from Cassandra. It’s rubbish and it’s hurtful.

“She’s just a beautiful, sweet woman from Queensland who runs a business and fell in love with me.”

Stefanovic was axed from Today days after his wedding to Yarbrough in December 2018. He made his return to the breakfast show earlier this year alongside Allison Langdon.

“People were saying to me, ‘You’ve lost the female demographic,’ and I’m not being arrogant or saying that didn’t happen, but I had so many lovely women coming up to me, women who have been divorced, saying: ‘I know there is a lot more going on here than we’re seeing. Keep going and don’t listen.’”

Stefanovic’s ex-wife Thorburn is now co-hosting the podcast Divorce Story – Surviving Separation, where she and journalist Annaliese Dent discuss the subject of marriage breakdown with experts and divorced women.

When asked about Thorburn’s project, Stefanovic said: “She’s earned the right to talk about whatever she wants. That’s just not how I would have done it. Whatever she does in her career and her life, I wish her the very best.”

“I’m glad it’s not me!” Cass Thorburn’s fiery take on Karl’s baby news

Today show host Karl Stefanovic is counting down the days until he can welcome his new baby girl into the world with his wife, Jasmine Yarbrough, in May.

On Tuesday though, Karl’s former wife Cassandra Thorburn shared her live reaction of her ex-husband’s exciting news.

The 48-year-old told the Kyle & Jackie O Show of her joy on the baby – the joy that it wasn’t hers, that is.

“What did you think when you saw that your ex is now having a baby with someone else? Was that a weird moment for you?” radio host Kyle Sandilands asked.

“What did I think?” Cassandra replied, laughing.

“I thought, ‘I'm glad it's not me!’

“To be honest, that's all I thought.”

The former Dancing With The Stars contestant went on to deny that she had any hard feelings towards her ex-husband.

“He's married. I'm living my life. We still share three children and nothing is ever going to change that,” she explained.

Karl and Cassandra legally separated in 2016 after 21 years of marriage and three children including sons Jackson, 20, and River, 12, and daughter Ava, 14.

Kyle also asked Cassandra if she had “taken another lover” following their split.

“Just one. Just one!” she confirmed however she did not clarify any further details about her relationship since she separated from Karl three years ago.

In January, Stefanovic told 3AW that he didn’t understand why people were concerned about his divorce.

“I thought ‘Hang on, a lot of people go through [divorce], why is mine such a big deal?’” he said.

“I still don't know why it was, but I got divorced, I did find love again, and I'm sorry if people are offended by that, but it's made me really happy.”

"Why is mine such a big deal?”: Karl Stefanovic slams speculation about his divorce

Karl Stefanovic has opened up about his divorce and admitted he doesn’t understand why it was “such a big deal”.

He left his wife of 21 years, Cassandra Thorburn, in 2016 and the pair finalised their divorce a year later.

It was just five months later that Stefanovic started a relationship with Jasmine Yarbrough, who he married in December 2018.

The divorce and new relationship affected his popularity, especially with female viewers of the Today show and after months of pressure, Stefanovic was sacked at the end of 2018.

“Personally, it was a bit hard because I thought a lot of people do go through relationship difficulties and, unfortunately, for me that was in a very public way, but that’s what happens when you’re a public person,” Stefanovic told Neil Mitchell on 3AW yesterday.

“But I thought, ‘Well hang on, a lot of people go through this, and why is mine such a big deal?’ I still don’t know why it was.

“I got divorced, I did find love again, and I’m sorry if people are offended by that, but it’s made me really happy.”

View this post on Instagram

Happy Anniversary my love! "Forever home" no more: Karl Stefanovic and Cassandra Thorburn sell family mansion for $9 million

Cassandra Thorburn and former husband Karl Stefanovic have officially cut all property ties after the sale of their $9 million Cremorne home in Sydney's exclusive north shore.

It took all of three weeks and little to no marketing.

The three-storey home was initially a half-built concrete shell when the couple bought it back in 2016.

However, before Thorburn could move their family into the home after it was complete in 2017, the marriage between her and Stefanovic had crumbled.

Piers van Hamburg, of Di Jones Neutral Bay, was offering the property quietly to interested buyers with a $9 million to $10 million price guide. This was ahead of plans to hit the real estate market formally for start of the spring selling season.

Insiders have said to Domain that the house was snapped up on Monday evening after negotiations with two buyers for more than the $9 million the former couple were asking for. The home was sold to a local family.

Van Hamburg declined to reveal the exact sale price of the luxurious property.

The sprawling home itself is on a north-facing block of 450 square metres. There are five bedrooms, formal and informal living areas, an indoor swimming pool, steam room and a wine cellar. There is also a boat shed on the title, as well as a soon-to-be-built jetty.

Scroll through the gallery above to see inside the extravagant home.

Karl Stefanovic on why his marriage to Cassandra Thorburn ended: “I didn’t care”

Former breakfast show host Karl Stefanovic made a confession regarding his split from Cassandra Thorburn on KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show yesterday morning.

The TV presenter revealed that he “didn’t care” towards the end of his marriage with his ex-wife.

As the three discussed morning habits, Karl opened up, saying before his relationship with Jasmine Yarbrough – who he wed last year – he was the type of person who made “a lot of noise” in the morning.

“I did used to make a lot of noise, though. Discover the fascinating history behind 6 superstitions

Ever wondered about the origins of common superstitions? Discover why raw onion is believed to ward against baldness, why four-leafed clovers are considered lucky and much more. Author Max Cryer investigates in the fascinating book Superstitions and we we have them from Exisle Publishing.

1. The superstitions behind umbrellas

The name is descended from the Latin diminutive umbra, meaning shade or shadow. For many centuries umbrellas were soley for protection from the sun. It wasn’t until the 1700s that it seemed to occur to anyone they could also protect from rain.

Naturally superstition gathered around them. The most common of them was not to open an umbrella inside the house - something bad will come of it. Nor must it ever be laid - even unfurled - on a bed or table.

And any woman yet unmarried who drops her umbrella must wait for someone else to pick it up. If she retrieves it herself, she will never wed.

2. The superstition behind our beds

For those who are unmarried, a suspicion might offer some help. It concerns ‘turning’ or ‘making’ a bed each day:

If one day you would be wed,
Turn your bed from foot to bed.

Married or not, the susperstitious abide by the belief that whatever side of the bed you get into a night is the side you must get out of in the morning. Not doing so will cause disruption. In fact, the belief resulted in the saying that someone disgruntled ‘got out the wrong side of the bed’. (However, any potential disruption caused by inadvertently getting out on the ‘wrong’ side can be adverted by putting one’s socks on the right foot first, then the left.)

The jury is still out on the ancient and vexed superstition regarding getting out of bed ‘backwards’. One school of thought decrees it is to be back luck, but the opposition says it is good luck. It’s probably best avoided by getting out of bed frontwards.

3. The superstitions behind baldness

In spite of extensive advertising claims to the contrary, most men afflicted by baldness find the condition irreversible. An American superstition claims that baldness can be delayed by cutting the existing hair very short, then singeing the cut ends.

Another superstition claims that when a man starts to go bald, he can slow the process by stuffing cyclamen leaves up his nose. And sprinkling parsley seeds on the head three times a year is also believed to help.

Three other cures have come to us from ancient traditions - albeit two of them might be rather difficult to obtain:

Rubbing with raw onion might help, but it is best done when you’re going to be alone for a while. After rubbing, smear with honey.

Believed to be more effective is a poultice of goose dung.

Best of all - if you can get it - herbalist William Bullein’s Bulwarke of Defence against all Sickness(published in 1562) offers the best preventative: poultices made of fat from the body of a bear.

4. The superstitions behind peas

If your peas don’t come from frozen in a bag from the supermarket, but are actually shelled out of their pods within the household, watch out for any pod which contains either just one pea - or nine, for good luck will then come to you. And if the pod which housed nine peas is rubbed on a wart, it will cure it. . . or so the superstition says.

5. The superstitions behind garlic

As far back as Ancient Egypt, garlic has been credited as a protection against a wide range of problems - and not just for its notable flavour.

At least two versions of its origin ignore that it is just a plant, allium sativum, a tasty and aromatic member of the onion family. Early Egyptians perceived garlic as a gift from the gods, but post-biblical mythology decreed that it grew where Satan’s left food trod as he was evicted fom the Garden of Eden (the print of his right foot gave rise to ordinary onions).

Supstition has credited garlic with various powers: protecting sailors from storms and shipwreck; giving soldiers courage; protecting miners from evil underground demons; if placed under the pillows of babies, protecting them overnight; and as a household garlands to protect against illness, witches, robbers and vampires.

The perceived connection between vampires and garlic was slow in reaching the English language. The first vampire story in English, The Vampyre by John Polidori (1819) makes no mention of garlic. Irish author Bram Stocker’s later vampire novel, Dracula (1897), introduced the powerful effects between vampires and what they greatly fear: daylight - and garlic. But as a protection it had been widely used for long before that - against toothache, sunstroke, leprosy, even bed-wetting.

Medical research can identify a genuine physical condition called alliumphobia - a powerful dislike, even fear of garlic. And there is a medical theory that some people simply must not each garlic because it causes disorder in certain blood types. Scholars point out that this condition, and its necessary repudiation of anything to do with garlic, may be a contributing factor to the legend of vampires and their avoidance of garlic.

The vampire legends were believed historically in southern Slavic countries and Romania, where an eye was kept on those who rufused to eat garlic. Consequently, superstition decreed that cloves of garlic be placed in the mouths of the deceased before they were buried, to ward off any passing vampies.Do you avoid walking under ladders because you think it is bad luck?

6. The superstitions behind four-leafed clover
A four-leafed clover has superstition going into a spin. Find one, and you’ll be able to see fairies and recognise evil spirits, which will give you the ability to tell who is secretly a witch. Carry it with you and evil spells will bounce right off you, and in your house the milk won’t turn sour. If a young woman puts the precious leaf inside her shoe, the first man she meets after stepping out will be her future husband, or (this suspicion has a let-out clause) if that’s not the case, it will be someone of the same name.

It has been estimated that in nature, there may be one four-leaf clover approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers. When found, each of the four leaves has a duty to fulfil; the first is for faith, the second is for hope, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck.

Note: It is perhaps worth adding that in recent years horticulturalists have successfully developed a clover plant with four leaves exclusively, so the purchase of a ‘four-leave-clover kit set’ will enable you to grow as many as you like.

This is an extract from Max Cryer's Superstititions and why we have them, Exisle Publishing. Get your copy here!

Written by Max Cryer.
Cassandra Thorburn was eliminated from Dancing With The Stars on Monday night and went on The Project on Tuesday night to talk about what it was like being on the show, coming face to face with her ex-husband's former Today co-host.

As Lisa Wilkinson is now a host on The Project, it was an awkward exchange to say the least, but both ladies remained professional and courteous.

Co-host on The Project Peter Helliar did his best to lighten the mood before Wilkinson dived in with the probing questions.

So lovely chatting with Cassandra Thorburn after her @DancingOn10 departure. She opened up about lessons she learned on the show, her eldest son leaving the nest, and why she's okay with not being the best dancer. #TheProjectTV pic.twitter.com/yDZBhfm7wc
— The Project (@theprojecttv) 12 March 2019

"Signing on for the show meant there would be this huge spotlight upon you. How have you felt about the way that's all played out?" asked Wilkinson.

Thorburn explained that she took the opportunity to put the huge media spotlight onto palliative care as her father passed away in October 2018 in palliative care.

“That’s exactly what I wanted, Lisa. I wanted to highlight palliative care, and I don’t think palliative care gets enough attention, so I wanted to highlight that

“There’s been so much thoughts about who I am and all of that, and I just kind of decided that this is a great opportunity to show who I am without people speculating all the time.”

Wilkinson quickly followed up with her next question about how Thorburn is navigating life as a single mum now.

“Have you worked out how to navigate being in the public eye as a single mum? Pardon the pun, but it’s a difficult dance,” enquired Wilkinson.

Thorburn had her answer prepped and ready, explaining:

“I'm happy, I'm very happy. Like my 'memorable year' dance on Dancing With The Stars.

“2016 was my most memorable year. It was a happy dance.

“Because at the end of that year, I had gotten to know myself better, I just found my place as who I was and what was important to me all of a sudden and what was going to be best for my children when they're with me,” Thorburn continued.

“I've embraced it and I'm really happy.”

Thorburn and Stefanovic divorced in 2016 after 21 years of marriage.

Did you watch The Project on Tuesday night? Let us know in the comments below.

Cassandra Thorburn’s son speaks out about his parents' divorce: “Someone had to protect her"

Jackson Thorburn has opened up about his parents Karl Stefanovic and Cassandra Thorburn’s divorce in a new interview.

The 19-year-old sat down with Woman’s Day and revealed the hardships his mother and family had to face during the tumultuous time.

The eldest sibling changed his Instagram handle to his mother’s surname last year and said that the conflict between his parents changed his perception of the both of them.

Karl – who was married to Cassandra for 21 years – decided to separate, but the decision didn’t go as smoothly as one would hope.

However, despite the messy divorce and tabloid smear, Jackson remains firmly grounded.

“What’s done is done.

“Despite what happened, he’s still my dad.”

But Jackson has a new-found respect for his mother.

“My mother is the most extraordinary person, and what she has weathered in these past few years, no one deserves the backlash,” he said.

He went on to describe his mother’s battle, as she faced “incredibly destructive” comments from the public and the press.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Woman's Day Magazine Australia (@womansdayaus) on Mar 10, 2019 at 7:08pm PDT

“Someone had to step up to protect her, and I knew that person was me.”

Cassandra, who joined the cast of Dancing With The Stars, previously said that Jackson doubted her dancing abilities, but her son remained supportive albeit a little doubtful.

“I was brutally honest with her, but it actually made her more determined!” he said.

The 47-year-old took a crack at the reality series but was unfortunately booted out of the competition after a three-week run on Monday night.

The mother-of-three said that the show allowed her to do “something for me, it’s been a long time”.

She was candid about her struggle as a newly single parent, revealing her journey on the show as she used dance as an emotional release.

“It was my lowest moment.
